OVERALL PLAN
Below i have put together an outline of what my news bulletin will contain and a breif overview of each section with some explanation. I have put it together by looking at both my industry and audience research. By doing this it has hopefully allowed me to take the first steps towards creating a news bulletin which both fits the needs of the consumers and is as close to industry standard as i can make it.
Intro Jingle
My first task when starting the creation process will be to make a jingle. Radio Rumford’s jingle will be a cross between the calm musical type of jingle used by Radio Merseyside and the sound effects based jingle we see on Wish FM and Heart. I wish to attract an audience between the range of 20 and 50, for this reason I want the jingle to appeal to a wider audience.
The jingle will include a short royalty free instrumental backing track with some speech edited on top of it. The speech will be recorded a number of times with a number of different people. I will then be able to lay these different voices on top of each other. By doing this I will get the ‘group speech’ type of effect which represents togetherness and community. However, by recording one voice at a time it will mask any imperfections that might occur by trying to get the voice actors to work simultaneously.
Bulletin Introduction
After the jingle has concluded the bulletin will start with a standard introduction by the main news presenter who will be played by me. The presenters name will be ‘Tony Horne’ and will begin the bulletin with a time stamp, greeting and his name.
Story One
After all the introductions the bulletin will start properly with the first story. This will be the most important and concerning of the five minutes. The story will be ambiguous and developing so the presenters will not be entirely sure what is going on. Despite this a calm, informative and professional manor will be kept. The presenters will be aware of a situation happening at Rumfords ‘Rosethawn Park’. The vague details will be that gun shots have been heard and unconfirmed reports of an explosion are coming through.
This story will include an outside broadcast. After briefly explaining what he knows about the story Tony will pass the audience over to the on scene reported ‘John Shields’. He will then start to explain that he is at the end of Acorn Way where the police have diverted traffic and are blocking any entrance to Rosethawn. He will also explain how the authorities are not giving any information and will describe the overall panic within the area. The story will end with some shouting from police and the public in the background as well as a helicopter and possibly some gun fire. The communication will be lost and Tony will apologise to listeners and say that they will try to reastablish a connection later on.
Story Two
The second story will be much less dramatic and will concern the decreasing levels of unemployment in Rumford. Tony will describe how a government report has found that in the last 5 years’ unemployment has decreased by 18%. He will then play cut to a professor from the University of Rumford who will express his concern about the quality of the jobs in the area despite the decreasing levels of unemployment.
Story Three
Story four will include another clip of a recorded interview of Rumfords local MP ‘Rona Mayflour’ describing her dismay at a planned proposal to cut funding to a local centre for disabled children in Rumford. She will talk about how the ‘Little Monkeys’ centre in Rumford many face closure due to government cuts.
Story Four
The third story will not contain any special features and will be a simple report on the towns local football team the ‘Rumford Rovers’. Tony will tell listeners how they did well against ‘Burnington City’ yesterday and say how things are looking up for the team.
Story Five
The final story will be the vox pop. Members of the public in the local community centre will have been asked to give their opinions on what they think of the council’s decision to set a standard parking fee of £2.00 per hour in Rumford town centre. There responses will be played in turn over music in the background as it will be a special report.
Travel News
The end of the vox pop will transition into the travel news where Tony will start to explain a problem on the motor way that is the main access route in and out of Rumford. He will also describe some traffic problems that are occurring due to the incident at Rosethawn park that was reported on in story one. Finally, there will also be a problem with a connecting train to Birmingham via Rumford Central which will be explained.
Weather Report
To end the bulletin there will be a brief weather report including weather for the rest of the day and tomorrow. After this Tony will then sign off and thank the listeners for listening.
Outro Jingle
Finally, a jingle, similar to the intro jingle will play. The same music will be used however the speech will instead be along the line of ‘Radio Rumford…. getting you through the day’ as appose to the ‘news travel and weather’ intro.
