Questionnaire
In order to get an idea of my target audience and to find out what they feel is important to include in a local news bulletin. I used survey monkey to create the survey and then distrabuted it around my family, friends, teachers etc. In my survey i asked the following questions:
1)What is your gender
2)What is your age?
3)How often do you listen to local radio?
4)What do you think is the most important thing to include in a local news bulletin?
5)What do you think is the least important thing to include in a local news bulletin?
6)Which local radio station do you listen to the most?
There was a clear trend from the survey that the older the respondant, the more they listened to local radio. So already we can see that the main target audience is likely to be adulters and older people.
The first pie chart on the right shows when and where people have said they are most likey to listen to local radio. The results clearly show that the majority of people who took the survey have said that they do listen to local radio at some point, even if it is just a small amount. Only 8% of respondents said that they never listen to local radio.
It is also clear from this chart that the majority of the audience listen to local radio in the car which corresponds with the next pie chart.
The second chart is for the question about what people think is most important to include in a local radio news bulletin. As seen, the highest choice is travel news which makes sense considering we have found that the majority of the audience are listening in a car. 37% of respondents think travel news is the most important feature. However this pie chart also alerted me to something i had not really considered as much. I added an 'other' box to this quesiton of the survey and it was used quite abit. As seen in the next picture, a good number of respondants thought sport news was the most important feature (an option that i hadn't even put on the question'. These comments made up for 16% of the answer to this question putting sports news ahead of both health and politcal news.
The final image showing the third pie chart mimics what the previous one shows. The main thing to take from this chart is that 'Health News' is the least popular and what people don't really care about hearing about on a local news bulletin. This makes sense as when i chose 'health' as a catergory it concerned the very specific report that was included in the news bulletins from my industry research. The story about the safe limit for alcohol was a stand alone one. For this reason it does not suprise me that 35% of respondants don't value it as it isn't really a very good catergory. The last pie chart also shows that the other catogaries are more or less in equal footing (apart from travel news which we saw to be the most popular in the previous question). Meaning it is probably best to include reports on all of these other categrories.
Overall from this survey i can see that it is important to recognise the diversity of the audience. Despite having a target audience to cater for there must be some leeway when deciding which reports to include to ensure there is somthing there for the majority of people.
